Less than two months ago, MTV News announced that this year’s VMA’s would take place on Sunday, August 30, at the Barclays Center in New York City. Outdoor performances will take place all around the city and include performances from superstars such as BTS, J Balvin, CNCO, and Lady Gaga. However, this ceremony this year will come with a few twists. Even though the VMA’s are one of the music awards shows that have not postponed their date, they have made a few changes due to the events of COVID-19.

Over the years, The MTV Video Music Awards have begun to create unique ways to for musicians to perform. Locations outside the stadium have included subway stations, streets in downtown Los Angeles, and live via satellite from a tour location. Spokespeople from MTV and Barclays Center had this to say when asked about the show:

The 2020 VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 30 and pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the city with limited or no audience, adhering to all state and city guidelines. In close consultation with state and local health officials‎, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event. The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021. MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.

As of August 8, 2020, MTV has announced that locations of these performances include Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. However, it has not been announced which performers will be at the announced locations. Although this year’s VMA’s will be different than ever before due the current pandemic, it will likely show some of the most unique musical performances that the show has ever seen. Tune into the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, August 30, at 8:00 EDT. Until then, here is a link to cast your vote and the announced VMA performers!
