On September 22, dick clark productions and NBC announced the nominations for the 2020 Billboard Music Awards. Originally taking place on April 29, 2020, this year’s awards will be based on the chart period of March 23, 2019 through March 14, 2020. Although the Billboard Music Awards does include categories based upon public vote, the majority of awards go to the musicians based on their Billboard chart success, including the award for Top New Artist. Yes, some musicians in the Top New Artist category may have had better chart performance than others. However, this year’s nominees have all had success on the Billboard charts. Here are the nominees for Top New Artist, as well as their accolades that will be taken into account before receiving their award:

DaBaby: His debut album Baby on Baby peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 200, with “Suge” peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart in 2019. Kirk peaked number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart and Billboard 200, with the lead single “Intro” debuting at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. “BOP” peaked at 11 and “VIBEZ” debuted at 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively. DaBaby is likely included in this list due to his year-end chart success in the Rap and R&B/Hip-Hop categories.

Billie Eilish: Having only one studio album, a live album, and EP be released within the given dates, Billie Eilish is a singer who has broken barriers in the music industry. When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? not only peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, it helped her peak at number 1 on the artist chart and have its hit song “Bad Guy” peak at number 1 on the Hot 100. Though her other hits peaked at number 1 and number 2 on the Hot Alternative Songs chart, they, unfortunately, missed the cutoff date. However, that may not be a big deal for the performance, considering When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? became the best-performing album of 2019. After being in the top five of most of the main Billboard charts, Eilish is likely one of the top contenders for this category.

Lil Nas X: When one hears the name Lil Nas X, one can easily think of his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road”. Though “Bad Guy” ended his number 1 streak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, he peaked and stayed at that position for nineteen weeks, breaking and currently holding the record for most weeks at number one. Although his song “Panini” hit number 1 and number 5 on the Billboard Rhythmic and Billboard Hot 100 respectively, he has yet to have another number one hit. However, his EP 7 peaked at the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Based on year-end charts, Lil Nas X may not win in this category, but will likely have high chances in the streaming categories.

Lizzo: Though this category doesn’t suit Lizzo based on her years of activity, once “Good As Hell” and “Truth Hurts” were released, Lizzo became a household name. Even though she has yet to peak at number one, she finished 2019 in the top three spots for charts such as Rap Digital Song Sales and Top New R&B/Hip-Hop Artists. All year, many music awards shows have shown the favorite female singers to be Billi Eilish and Lizzo. Based on her music released within the year, she will likely have a good award show night.

Roddy Rich: Compared to the other musicians on this list, Roddy Rich has been on charts the least amount of times. However, lucky for him, his debut studio album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial peaked at number one on the Billboard 200, including a Billboard Hot 100 hit “The Box”, peaking at number one. Although his chances are not as high as the other musicians, Roddy Rich has shown music lovers everywhere that he is an incredible music maker who will go far within the next year or so.

Though Billie Eilish finished in the number one spot on the Top New Artist Chart for the year-end 2019 chart, all artists nominated this year deserve this award. The 2020 Billboard Music Awards airs October 14. At 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
