Descartes, a philosopher who once said: “Cogito ergo sum”. Or, as per the English translation: “I think therefore I am.” It is to have doubt and awareness of one’s thoughts, to critique, and acknowledge them is to prove existence and thinking.
Billie Eilish brings “Therefore I Am” as her newest single to rock the world of Western philosophy. Well, maybe not the same way as Descartes did in 1637, but in her own way which unlocked her into stardom.
Eilish released her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” back in 2019. Launching her into a whole new realm of stardom. With just turning 18, Eilish has opened up about her struggles with fame and attention. She is known to wear oversized clothing so the media doesn't sensationalize her body. Eilish has fought back and tackled body-shaming releasing a short film, titled “NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY”, which premiered at her “Where Do We Go? World tour.
“Therefore I Am” follows suit from the release of her debut album, as it shares DNA with songs like “All the Good Girls Go To Hell” and “My Strange Addiction.” It shares the same funk, glitchy rhythmic beats, and an overall playfulness that is seen throughout her entire album. This song is definitely one of my favorites from Eilish. The chorus is one of her best yet which showcases how versatile her vocals are. The overall vibe of this song makes you feel like the baddest bitch around.
Billie Eilish is able to see through the fakeness as in her chorus she sings “I’m not your friend or anything / Damn, you think that you’re the man / I think therefore I am.” As she see right through those who send hate and the endless media coverage she ask those to “get my pretty name out of your mouth” and to not “talk about me like you might know how I feel”.
Since the release of her debut album, Eilish has released “No Time To Die” for the delayed James bond film, and a lofi inspired neo-soul single “My Future”, and now “Therefore I Am”. All showing her diverse talent in handling more orchestral pieces to bass induced beats. With no clear view of a sophomore album in sight, there is still an excitement to see her and her brother FINNEAS explore different sounds. One thing we can expect is Billie Eilish continuing her reflection as a young adult exploring her continuous rise in fame and how its translate in her music.
Billie Eilish is set to premiere a performance of “Therefore I Am” at the American Music Awards on November 22nd, which includes performances by Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Megan Thee Stallion, Dua Lipa and others. She’s nominated for Favorite Artist: Alternative Rock, and Favorite Social Artist. Her documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry is set to release February 2021 through Apple+ and select theatres.
